Furniture Makeup? Glamour Glaze

Might the thought of “Why on earth would you put makeup on Furniture?” be running through your head as you read the title of this post? The van Gogh chalk paint collection has this super fun line of finishing products for your pieces that are insanely easy to use. I know there are plenty of people who read this blog and aren’t near a van Gogh Paintologist (what we call our retailers) so I’ll be doing a series of posts as I finish pieces to highlight the products in the collection and hopefully give you some inspiration to give them a shot.

Today is all about Glamour Glaze. It’s a silver glaze that really adds that special “bling” to your piece.

I found this side table online and went to see it.

Glamour glaze before

In the listing it looked MUCH larger than it was. It’s really the size of a nightstand. It’s a reproduction and really nothing special. Banged up and the intricate “carvings” are actually plastic. The perfect specimen for some furniture makeup if you ask me.

GG before GG before

One of our Paintologists had posted a picture of the van Gogh color Patina with our Glamour Gaze over it. It was all the Inspiration I needed and I went to town.

Two quick coats of Patina left it looking a bit like this:

gg all patina

Looks plain and really needs the details highlighted. Rather than using a dark wax… that would be expected, the Glamour Glaze would really turn it up a notch I think.

This is what it looks like in the jar.

Glamour Gaze

Just a pretty silver-grey. Brushed on though… look out!

I decided just to highlight the “carvings”. There was the weird texture places on top and on the sides and the flourishes on the bottom, plus the spots on the drawers too. That should be plenty.

I took a synthetic brush and brushed it on. It looked like this:

I used some damp cheesecloth to wipe it back. I take the wet cloth and wad it up into a ball with the “tail” parts wadded up so as not to drag and make “trails” in my work.

I just wipe back the raised places and edges of the relief pieces.

Waiting for it to dry I took a look at the hardware. It was a bronze color and I wasn’t “feeling” it. So I did this:

I just brushed on the glamour glaze on top and then dabbed at it slightly with the wet cheesecloth.

Once everything was dry, I gave it all a coat of wax and put everything back together.

Here’s some shots of the finished product:

That’s just a little of what Glamour Glaze can do. Layer it over Mascara or Revenge for that “Zinc” look, Don’t wipe it back at all for a solid silver finish, highlight it more with dark wax… a so much more. What do you want to try?

Furniture Makeup? Luminous Eye Shadow…

A few weeks ago I hit an estate sale with a friend of mine and picked up this dresser…

(my apologies for the iPhone picture)

It needed a LOT of TLC…

I let it sit for a while and waited until it “spoke” to me about what to do with it. Crazy, right? Have a look at the finished product and you tell me what you think….

I pulled all the drawers and cleaned them off. I filled in some of the larger dents and dings all over and gave it a good washing- it was SUPER dirty. I just use warm water. If there’s some sticky spots, I may add a very small bit of soap or a very light sand. (I have used TSP in the past and it seems to retard the paint adhesion  on the edges and corners… which is ok, if you plan to distress, I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with this one yet. If you do use TSP to clean it, wash it down REALLY WELL with warm water after cleaning to remove leftover residue and you’ll probably be fine.)

Once I washed it down, I was hearing whispers of “feminine” which you may say “DUH!” Initially, I was thinking wild, maybe even some animal print on the drawers fronts or zebra stripes. Not this time…

Subtle was the name of the game with this one and she started screaming for shine. I threw two coats of “Compassion” on the drawers and “First Kiss” on the body. Fully intending to deeply distress the body of the piece and leave the drawers pristine. I wasted to try something new.

Glass Knobs were the topic of discussion one day among the Paintologists and the more I looked at this dresser, the more I heard her shout “me, Me, try them on ME!!”  ok, let’s give it a shot.

I went on a search and took a shot in the dark with some I found online. I looked at a lot of different colors and decided clear was probably the best bet to highlight the finish I was finally seeing in my mind. Once all the pieces were dry I taped out the ridges on the drawers.. TAPED?! I know.. for those who know me, I am a L.A.Z.Y. painter (I prefer to think of it as busy…). I do not care to take the time to tape as I want to paint, and I have lots of things on my mental list. Being forced to slow down and focus on a straight line is crazy.. I’ll admit it, this time I taped. <hangs head in shame>

Can you hear me? I’m whispering… “i think it was worth it…

I pulled out the Luminous Eye Shadow from the Furniture Makeup line. Have you seen it? When you open the container it looks like this:

Saved by Scottie Luminous Eye Shadow

Kathy van Gogh refers to it as “Metallic Champagne Gorgeousness” and I tend to agree. It can give a bit of a pearl-y glow to lighter colors as well. I was going for something in the middle.

The product is a little thick. Thick is perfect when you want a heavier application, to run it through a stencil, or trowel it on for some texture. (On a bit of a side note, I just think it’s great when products have multiple uses, don’t you?) I decided to thin it a bit to control the intensity.. I was going for subtle. I took a bit of it out of the jar and transferred it to a small sample container I had. It has a lid too so I can screw it on tight if I make more than I need now and use it later. I thinned it to the consistency I wanted and used the van Gogh chalk paint collection 1″ synthetic brush to apply. Once it dried, I decided one coat wasn’t shining enough so I added a second, perfection! I told myself I would wait until all the pieces were completely finished to put it together. (I hadn’t even started the mirror at this point)

Then the knobs came in the mail… once opened, I had to see them on. H.A.D. to.

I think if you’re still reading this, you deserve a sneak peek…

Are you starting to feel it too? I got SO excited I NEEDED to finish this one… quickly. I grabbed the mirror off the front porch. (Don’t you store your extra projects there? If you’ve had a peek at the photo on my facebook page, you KNOW there isn’t room in my garage)

A quick consult with my 16-year-old daughter on color & makeup placement and I went to town. I took the glass out to avoid shadowing (seeing the paint in the mirror reflection or worse- the old finish) and completed that baby in record time.

Here’s a few shots of the finished product:

Some Before and Afters….

So I have been busy… some days I’m not quite sure with what… but busy none the less. I DO actually have something to show for it at the moment though: What do you think?

Not the easiest to see- there was massive water damage on the top and bumps and bruises all over. Now… she looks like this:

I just drool over the details…

So there you have it. Just a little of what I’ve been working on… I’m SO excited for all the things I’ve got cooking… details as soon as I can share, Promise!

A cute table

A week ago or so I got an email from Alex. He lives in the same town and stumbled across the blog. He’s a furniture painter too and wanted to know if I carried the pain in my home. I literally had just that day taken it up to Court of Shoppes and set it up so I told him that and gave him directions (lucky for me it’s super close to where we live). The next morning I was up finishing up a few things and up walks this nice man. After a quick chat, I find out it was Alex- how fun! Why am I telling you this? Well, I asked him to please let me know what he thought of the paint. This is what I got a few days later:

alex table

Isn’t it amazing?! He was even kind enough to share how he did it.

van Gogh (turquoise color) is the base then Chalk as an accent, after that I distressed it a bit with sand paper. Then clear wax  and then dark wax (both a different brand I have left over) as the top coat. That’s what gives it most of it’s weathered look.

He painted the first coat erratically, every which way back and forth and went as far as to splatter paint on which really gives it a 3rd dimension that the dark wax stays in and you get a lot of the dark spots/areas.

There you have it- Don’t be afraid to experiment because look what you might end up with. I think this table looks like the fabulous Patina you find on copper roofs and statues. He’s already started a second piece and I can’t wait to see what he does with that one!

It’s for sale too! Let me know if you’re interested and I can put you in touch.

Happy Easter!

Upcycle Contest Finished

You’ll recall I posted a before picture of some pieces I picked up at Habitat for Humanity to participate in their Upcycling Contest. (see post here)

I’m done! I know you were on the edge of your seat waiting…right?

IMG_0327

Cute, don’t ‘cha think? What is it you ask? Oh yea, here’s a peek:

IMG_0329

Yes, I did it. A dress-up cabinet. I am SO happy with the way it turned out!! I love the colors, I love the way it looks plain until you open it up and then it’s just kid-friendly all over the place! The drawer is great for accessories and shoes and all the crazy things children collect. Then I of course had to use all the available space-

                                             IMG_0325               IMG_0326

and the grand finale´…….

IMG_0324

…and Yes, I did draw that Scottie dog free-hand, thank you very much.

Please tell me you love it as much as I do… I don’t want to turn it in. I’ll let you know when the link is up for voting as I would certainly appreciate the help. :)

an upcycle contest for Habitat

I received an email from the local Habitat for Humanity chapter and they mentioned a contest. They call it an upcycling contest. The basic idea is you receive $100 “credit” at the ReStore and grab some things, turn them into something else, and submit photos. Then you drop off your item at one of their ReStores and they take them to a local home show. People vote, the winner get a $500 Visa Gift Card. Doesn’t that sound like fun? I think so. I emailed the contact and begged to participate. Hooray- they wanted me!

After scouring both locations, I had this FABULOUS idea! I “bought” this amazing china cabinet. We had both kids so it wouldn’t fit in the van so they said I could pick it up the next weekend. Guess what?! It was still too big for the van- BOO! ok, quickly, run around and come up with something… the upside is that nearly EVERYTHING I need was there that day- Woot!

Read the email today again and realized they want the before and after pictures on Monday…oops. I better get working.

Here’s what I bought…..

Do you ever start doing something and then realize possibly you have no idea what you’re doing and maybe it wasn’t the greatest plan or idea…? Hmm… think that’s what happened here?

IMG_0308

I’ll keep you posted on my progress…

My fun new things…..and BIG news!!

I am so thrilled to be really moving along to my goal of my dream store! I can not wait! I love taking one man’s trash and using paint to turn it into treasure for another. I love the sense of accomplishment when you really get into a project and see the incredible transformation the piece is taking on. Mostly I love helping others do it too! Who doesn’t love the satisfaction of saving a few $ or using a new learned skill to make a few $ instead?

In that vein I am working on some really exciting things. I have talked about one of them on my facebook page and I want to make sure to mention it here in case some of you aren’t hooked up with the facebook SavedbyScottie page (and then I would also like to ask, Why not?).

My paint

I have been researching a way to add to my “tool box” of sorts and am so pleased to announce my affiliation with the van Gogh Chalk Paint Collection! I LOVE this product and I LOVE this collection! The paint color palette is vibrant, the color names are cheeky, and the coverage and consistency are rich. Each can has a thumbprint on the lid testing the color and as a mark of quality control.

I am in absolute awe of the options for finishing your pieces. The wax is completely non-toxic and smells absolutely divine- it’s made of beeswax and will truly have you craving honey and toast in no time. There’s more than just the wax though… this collection includes a whole line of “Furniture Makeup” to use to add that special “WOW” factor.

Moon Glaze- add a silver sheen and glaze to your pieces.

moon glaze top

Kitchen Cabinet Antiquing Glaze- the easy peezy way to refresh those dated but perfectly usable cabinets. You’ve seen that look on Pinterest everyone loves? Recreate it with paint and this glaze. Protects and gives you the perfect antique finish without the hassle of waxing every cabinet.

"Chalk" with antiquing glaze

“Chalk” with antiquing glaze

Embossing Plaster- love those intricate 3-D wood carved designs on drawers and cabinets? You can make your own with this product and a stencil. Once dry it can be painted, waxed, glazed, distressed, etc. Just like wood to blend in and look like it’s always been there. It even does double duty as a decoupage medium. Use it with fancy tissue paper to line drawers or drawer fronts to add a “Pop” of fun!

Luminous Eye Shadow- easiest way to describe this is metallic champagne gorgeousness. My personal favorite so far is layered over the Balsamic paint for a deep iridescence.

"Balsamic" with Luminous Eye Shadow used on kitchen island

“Balsamic” with Luminous Eye Shadow used on kitchen island

Paint Crackle- this can also be used as a sizing for metallic leaf products. It does just what is says…crackles the paint to expose the next layer down whether it be a former layer of paint, a new layer of paint you just added, or the original wood finish.

Ancient Crackle- this is a more dramatic look…a deeper crackle. It gives the appearance of old-looking stone and is a much more coarse finish.

Ancient crackle

Kathy van Gogh (the collection creator) is a long-term professional faux-finisher and true artist. She is constantly on the look out for more products that will make life easier so expect new products to come out in time as well. She is a woman of vision and the utmost integrity and I am proud to be associated with her.

I believe in this product and Kathy’s vision SO much that I am not just a retailer, I am also the newest Distributor for the North East US market. Do you know someone who may want to carry this paint in their shop and show others how to use it too? I’d love to introduce it to them and give them some incredible details about Kathy’s aspirations for this incredible product.
